Pln week 13 nervous system part ii. 31 pairs of spinal nerves: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, 1 coccyx. B/w dura and walls of vertebral canal: epidural space: areolar tissue, blood vessels, protective padding of adipose tissue. Simple squamous epithelia and collagen/elastic fibres that extend to outer surface of pia matter. Subarachnoid space filled with csf: shock absorber, diffusion for gases, nutrients, chemical messengers, and wastes. Elastic/collagen fibres firmly bound to neural tissue. Can disrupt normal circulation of csf, damaging or killing neurons and neuroglia in affected areas. Attach bone to bone to provide structural stability. 3 longitudinally oriented branches of vertebral arteries: 1 anterior spinal artery (asa) service 2/3 of cord, 2 posterior spinal arteries (psas) service 1/3 posterior part of cord. Pass through intervertebral foramen and divide into anterior and posterior radicular arteries. Course medially until joint with either asa or psa.
