Plx 111 week 2: what is creativity / living in creative cities. The existence of cities is made possible through creative inventions. Steel i beam; for tall buildings it allows for buildings to be taller (skyscrapers, etc) which meant density infrastructure that let cities exist. Takes place mostly in europe and north america. New york and tokyo were the only megacities. Largely in the developing world but also with significant effects in europe, north america. Process of rapid urbanization leading to a lack of employment, poverty, stratification, polarization and dual economies, a large informal economy but opportunities as well. Introduction of the factory: space-intensive and labour intensive sites; Leads to a more pronounced class system: powerful entrepreneurial upper class, merchant middle, poor labourers. Massive in-migration and huge scale of urbanization: people looking for jobs. The transformation of cities as manufacturing centres to cities as service centres.
