Canadians obsessed with American culture, movies, food, etc.
75 – 80% of successful films are American
America is accused of cultural imperialism

Our definition of what a good film is has been shaped by American films
Think their products are better than others
Half of the bistros in France have been replaced by American fast food restaurants
oRather eat American garbage than their own cultural foods

How are American films so successful?
1. Historical advantage
a. Head start in film industry
b. Grew into a big business in the US faster than anywhere else
c. Europe had 2 world wars, destroyed most countries

2. Money & Marketing
a. Always well financed
b. Big budgets for movies and film marketing
c. No country has the resources to market like America
3. Has very large and affluent Society
a. Back then only rich class and peasants
b. Early 20th century – middle class
c. Spent money on entertainment
d. Own built in affluent middle class – consumed more films
e. Middle class then spread around the world
