Pol203 - politics of the environment - lecture 4: the state. The state has been recently developed in the modern times but as a concept has existed for some time; it has also been predominantly western. The idea of a state was first recorded in 1645 in the treaty of westphalia. It was the product of intense competition between feudal lords, territories, militarism and complex international relations. State as a concept was exported during the colonial era. State and environment have interacted since its conception. Modern environmental protection in most developed countries begin in the 1960"s during the progression of social movements. Example: the swedish epa was created in 67 and was one of the first of its kind to protect and preserve environmental autonomy. Their relationship has changed over time; it has been overtly positive, however there are some problems that are not attended (i. e. tragedy of commons). Pluralism - the contention of different interests with power and recognition.
