Approaches: many approaches to the study of politics but can be broadly categorized: Institutions the rules that structure human interaction. Ideas the role that ideas (ie. ideologies, religion, beliefs) play in political action. Politics is always embedded within context: history colony, economics staples thesis. Institutional - federalism: comparative context, other developed states, global south. Scale: environmental problems have scale, local problems limited to single watershed, global problems such as climate change. Institutions also exist at different scales: local conservation authorities, environment canada. Scale of problems and institutions often poorly matched. Issues of justice: humans divided into multiple cleavages: state, gender, class, ethnicity, generation, not all groups effected by environmental problems equally. Justice: within states environmental justice, between states climate change, between generations. Air pollution and poverty (buzzelli and jerrett, 2007) Global south: distinct set of environmental problems, role of globalization.
