Types of power: economic, political, social. Power the ability to authorize influence or coerce behaviour. Exercised by virtue of: legal positon of authority, status, legitimate use of force. Traditional legitimacy: rule is justified on the basis of long established custom or habit. Charismatic legitimacy: leader vested with exceptional and extraordinary personal qualities that make her uniquely suited to role of leader, leaders often claim to have been divinely chosen. Legal-rational legitimacy: rationally created rules and legal statues serve as basis of power. Increasingly preferred in modern societies due to: rise of lite(cid:396)a(cid:272)(cid:455) a(cid:374)d (cid:862)pu(cid:271)li(cid:272) opi(cid:374)io(cid:374)(cid:863, challenges to traditional authority, demise of religion, rise of democracy, allowance for smooth, peaceful successions. Bismark the doctrine of the possible: the attainable. Marx the organized power of one class for oppressing another. All relate to core issue of exercise of power.
