What is psychology: come from greek word psyche (spirit of), logy (study of) The scientific study of the mind, brain and behaviour pg 3: gain knowledge through experimentation. Mind & the brain: mind processes thoughts and feelings, brain is the organ, biological aspect. Anomia: reflects difficulty with expressive language: damage of left hemisphere and parietal lobe. Counsellors: provides some sort of therapy or support to clients, but doesn"t have advanced enough training in providing psychological treatment, generally not regulated, no min. Social worker: focus on social determinants, some do psychotherapy, advocate for social change, areas of expertise include child protection, family welfare, hospitals, private practice. Psychiatrist: medical doctors who specialize in diagnosis + treatment of psychological problems, licensed to prescribe drugs, some places psychologists can, but not many. Levels of analysis: social cultural influence, social or behavioural level. Involves relating to others and personal relationships: psychological, mental or neurological level. Involves thoughts, feelings, emotions: biological, molecular or neurochemical.
