Operant conditioning - mom gives milk as positive reinforcement for saying milk . Learning does not account for generativity (concern for the future, a need to nurture and guide younger people and contribute to the next generation, usually occurs in 40s to 60 years old. Infants are aware of syntax (grammatical rules that govern how words are composed into meaningful strings, rules of language ) when they start speaking. Nativist view - infants come into the world with some basic knowledge of how language works. 10 to 13 months - some words. 16 to 24 months - vocabulary spurt. Mostly words for objects, many words learned after just hearing them once, vocabulary spurt not without errors. Overextension - using a word to describe a wider set of objects or actions than it is meant to. Underextension - using a word to describe a narrower set of objects or actions than it is meant to.
