WHY ARE BENEFITS IMPORTANT?
Help attract and retain the right people to achieve business objectives
Modest salary increases
Health care benefits becoming increasingly important aging workforce
GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED BENEFITS
Social programs to protect citizens when they cannot earn income, employers and
employees fund for plan PLUS tax revenues
Employment Insurance
Federal program that provides income benefits if a person is unable to work
through no fault of their own WITHOUT JUST CAUSE
Termination, resignation, illness, maternal/parental leave, compassionate care leave
Eligible qualifying period: minimum # of hours for a minimum # of weeks
Waiting period for benefits to begin
Must demonstrate they are actively seeking work
Can get part time job that earns up to 25% of benefit
Employee contributions payroll deductions and employers 1.4times employee
contribution
Supplemental unemployment benefit (SUB) plan: agreement between an
employer and the employees for a plan that enables employee eligible for EIT to
receive additional benefits from a SUB fund created by employer helps maintain
standard of living

Canada/Quebec Pension Plan (C/QPP)
Provide three types of benefits: retirement income, survivor or death benefits
payable to the employee’s dependants and disability benefits payable to employees
with disabilities and their dependants.
Benefits payable only to those who make contributions to the plans (and family)
Workers’ Compensation
Provides income and medical benefits to victims of work related accidents or
illnesses (or to dependants) REGARDLESS OF FAULT
Employers pay full cost of system worker compensation board pays the claims
(and collects them)
Include: payment for medical treatment and rehabilitation, and income benefits
during the time in which the worker is unable to work
Survival benefits also available
Controlling Workers’ Compensation Costs
Reduce accident/illness causing conditions health & safety programs
comply with government safety standards
Worker compensation costs increase the longer it takes for employee to return
oRehabilitation programs for injured/ill employees physical therapy
programs, career counseling to guide employees into new, less stressful jobs
to reintegrate them into the workforce
Start conduction a physical demands analysis for the jobs
Vacation & Holidays
Minimum amount of paid vacation that must be provided to employees

Pay in lieu of notice = the lump sum payment employers give to get employee to
stop working immediately = amount of pay for the notice period
Severance Pay
Applicable in CERTAIN situations
Pay for Mass Layoffs
Only applicable in BC, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick & Newfoundland &
Labrador
Pay when layoff 50 or more employees
