Contains memories and urges that are forbidden or dangerous-anxiety and dark thoughts. Kept from consciousness, but can still cause problems. Freud says one way of discovering the unconscious mind is by looking at your dreams (dream analysis) Manifest content: the surface info you can remember. Freud is more concerned with the latent content; the deeper meaning of the dream. Unconscious: thoughts, feelings, urges and other info that is too difficult to bring to conscious awareness. Id: irrational, illogical, impulsive dimension of personality (devil) Ego: rational, rationally planful, mediating dimension of personality. Different parts of the personal are in constant conflict. Defense mechanisms ward off the resulting anxiety from this conflict. Denial: refusal to believe info that leads to anxiety. Displacement: shift aggressive impulses to a more acceptable or less threatening target.
