The study of how people think, influence, and relate to other people. Involves three adaptive problems: how do we think about the social world? (social cognition, how does our behaviour adapt in the presence of others? (social influence, how do we establish relationships with others? (social relationships) The study of how people use cognitive processes to help make sense of other people as well as themselves. Trying to make sense of environment and situations. Social schemas: schemas: general knowledge structures about a particular topic in memory. Ex: things in air are birds, therefore airplane is a bird: social schemas: schemas about social experiences or people, stereotypes: social schemas about traits and behaviours of groups and their members. Most common are based on gender, race, and age. The power of expectations about a person"s actions to cause that person to behave in the expected way.
