Document Summary

Psy302, section 011 (dr. ma) |child development | february 26, 2014| lecture 5. What does it mean to learn a language, theories of language development, stages of early language development, two challenges for the young learner. A symbol is something that represents something else. Symbol systems are used for representing and conveying information. Words are social conventions (arbitrary relationships agreed upon by a social group) Finite set of words to express an endless number of concepts/ideas; for every language, spoken/written/signed. Phonological development: sound system of a language (ex. combining sounds to make a word) Semantic development: expressing meaning (ex. meaning of that word) Syntactic development: rules for combining words or sounds (ex. certain words come after that word) Pragmatic development: how language is used in social context (ex. using words to interact with others) Language comprehension is understanding what others say/sign/write and language production is actually speaking/signing/writing to others; comprehension comes before production!
