Learning: permanent behaviors change as a result of experience. Empiricists: (nurture) infants must learn to interpret sensations: william james (1890) blooming, buzzing, confusion . Differentiation theory (gibson, 1969, 1987, 1992: integrated and independent of experience, can be interpreted on its own, children explore and learn to detect distinctive features. Enrichment theory (piaget, 1954, 1960: cognitive schemes, knowledge, experiences. Ex: seeing an image that looks like a mouse but when you are primed to see a mans face, you are able to see it. Least mature sense in newborns but it develops rapidly at first within months.
