Jobs more than just the way we make a living. Men not allowed to be dependent, to ask for help. Work should be central focus of one"s life. Men who earn more feel more masculine. Not as clearly defined still in development. No clear expectation that they will work life. Expectation that most will leave work to have kids. Must balance work & domestic responsibility w/o significant accommodation or reward. Few women view work as key means to self-actualization. 102 men and 112 women in duel-earner couples. Women want a husband to earn money. Men want wives to earn money (but not more money) In 30% of dual-earner couples, women earn more. Providing incomes means something different depending on which gender is doing it. Women"s earnings as helping rather than providing . Alternative divisions of finances (husband pays real bills) Not earn more than the man, because then that questions the man"s masculinity.
