Anxiety and fear are not mutually exclusive. Similarities between anxiety and fear: negative affect (cid:523)doesn"t feel good(cid:524) Differences between anxiety and fear: somatic symptoms of tension (heart rate increase, sweat, needing to pee, stomach tingling, anxiety: future oriented and the feelings that one cannot predict or control upcoming events. With anxiety there is no immediate danger on ones life: fear: immediate alarm reaction. Fear ocuring at an inappropriate times can cause panic attacks. Panic attacks: sudden experience of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms. Comorbidity is very high when it comes to anxiety. Suicide rate is higher with individuals with anxiety. 1st time introduced to dsm was dsm-3. Dsm criteria: excessive anxiety and worry more days than not for at least 6 months about a number of events or activities, difficult to control worry- hard to disengage from worry and focus on other issues.
