Born 1856 to a jewish family in vienna, austria. Married martha bernays in 1886 and had 6 children. Early in his career, discovered the talking cure : the youngest was anna freud who followed in his footsteps and became a psychologist. Moved to england in 1938 at the time of wwii threat and nazism. Purpose: to find out what is really going on in the unconscious recesses of our human minds. Framework for the study of personality theories: the view of man underlying the theory, the structure of personality, the dynamics of the personality, the development of the personality, optimal development, views on psychopathology. Assumptions about human beings and science itself: the assumption of psychosocial conflict, the assumption of biological and psychic determinism, the mechanistic assumption. This was freud"s way of making his theory sound more scientific. Pessimistic view of man: we are always in conflict, never happy or at peace.
