Learn new skills, fun, affiliation, thrills & excitement, exercise & fitness, competitive challenge, winning. Boys are more motivated by competition vs girls are more attracted to social opportunities. Other things to do, change of interest, excessive pressure, dislike of coach, failure, lack of fun, overemphasis on winning. Lack of teamwork & concerns about ability were impt reasons to females. Deeper motives: perceived competence, goal orientations, intrinsic motivation. Low perceived competence, tend to focus on outcome goals (therefore more extrinsically motivated), less self-determined forms of motivation, under stress (competence breeds confidence; higher competence is most likely because it"s fun) Teach children to evaluate their performances by their own standards of improvement to enhance their self- perceived abilities; create task-oriented motivational climates (for internal locust of control); foster self- determined behavior via autonomous competent coaching strategies; reduce stress.
