Social support: social interactions embedded in relationships that provide a person w/ potential access to actual/perceived resources from others perceived as caring. Actual (objective, observable by your eye, easy to measure), perceived (subjective, getting strong social support but not observable by eye), embededness (broader social networks) Social strain: social interactions that are a source of stress b/c they drain resources/help is not helpful at all. *not all social relationships are equal even if they"re receiving a lot of perceived support, eg. teens getting in the wrong crowd help is not really helpful. Social support is related to longevity, ie. assoc"d with dec risk of chd, mental illness, etc. Textbook talked about studies of actual vs. perceived assistance in relation to health. perceived social support & health seemed to have a strong link vs. actual assistance relationship confounded by the fact that caregiving inc, naturally, as illness progresses.
