MemoryChapter 7 MemoryDr Niusha GhazbanA woman who was watching TV Donald Thompson before she was attacked by someone when asked to describe her attacker she described Donald Thompsonher last memoryand was completely sure that he was the attacker1Common Sense Models of MemoryDiscussion of common assumptions misconceptions about memoryNOT teaching these as accurate Our goal is to examine the shortcomings of these modelsand set up our discussion of what psychology has to offer now about how memory worksSo why botherbecause which common sense model you currently hold if any has implications for what you are likely to believe about memory your idea of what memory is can affect your response or skew your attitudetelling someone how could you forget that or why do you remember thatespecially in consequential situations like being a juror in a case where memory is involvedSo what are the typical ways that people view memory1A The Freudian Model of MemorySuggests that all memories especially for traumatic events are permanently preserved and intact with all the original detail from the event foreverbut are often inaccessible represseed under normal conditionsso a special strategy must be used to gain access such as hypnosis dream interpretation word association or socalled truth serum Psychologists are skeptical of recovered memories can be false memories because techniques used to recover them are controversial The modern mainstream psychology view is that there is no scientificallyacceptable evidence to support the Freudian model as the way that memories are storedand some therapists hold this view especially concerning alleged repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse as an explanation for adult problems like anorexia failed relationships depression etc with potentially tragic consequences Linked to issues with Suggestibility you can potentially pose a question as eitherorfor example lets say a child has been assaulted at school if the investigator says did he come to you with toys or candyyoure essentially suggesting a story to the child Perhaps there was no toy or candy but youre suggesting these details which could skew the investigation Children dont like to confront and would rather please so they are more likely to agree with one of the options and their memories are so malleable1B The Videotape Model of MemoryAn updated version of the Freudian model assumes that at least some memories remain perfectly intact for a very long time possibly foreverlike a videotape of the event that can be played at willbut this view has the same limitations as the Freudian modelno supporting evidence and lots of contradictory evidencewell see that the current mainstream cognitive view of memory views all memories as vulnerable to forgetting distortion and inaccuracyBut what about photographic memories or eidetic memoriesSo How Do You Account For Photographic Memory ThenCertainly some people show better memory than others and most people examples in textbook of people with extraordinary memorybut there is no credible evidence to suggest that there has ever been a person with a photographic memory if you interpret photographic to mean
