Family is not always a place of safety, loving, caring etc. Many families are a source of caring and violence. Certain types of violence have become normative in our society ex. male violence. Society is violent towards some radicalized groups and the poor. Violence is linked to relationships of power, subordination, and oppression based on racism, sexism and class exploitation. Family violence: physical, sexual,emotional, financial, verbal and psychological abuse. There is ambiguity surrounding this definition b/c the legal definition of abuse is narrower and is defined from a male perspective. Much family violence is unreported and underreported b/c it is considered private matter. Thus, measurement of family violence can be problematic. Family relations and violence are reflective of relations of power and inequality in canadian society. Capitalists create jobs that are dangerous/ life-threatening.
