In some traditional societies, they held the position of appointing and deposing the chiefs or heads of clan, and decision-making was shared equally between women and men. Misconceptions held by europeans believed that women were subservient to men. Early european explorer and fur traders depended heavily on the innate abilities and survival skills of aboriginal women for the survival in the new world . The economic infrastructures sustained by natural resources were perceived uncivilized by europeans who did not understand the non-materialistic culture.
