Document Summary
Toronto, on: james lorimer & company, ltd. , publishers. The thought that children can abuse their parents is so far beyond the pale for most of us that we would quite likely dismiss such a notion. Parents are the one with the power in the family and they do control most resources. Violence is a means of control or power for anyone and that is always present as a resource whenever anyone believes it should be used. Cultural prejudice of ours that we believe is the dominant who are more likely to use violence as a resource than the subordinate. Children generally between the ages of ten and twenty four years are usually dependent on their parents and live with them in the same home. About 10% of children between the ages of 3 and 18 have attacked their parents. 3 % is severe violence, such as using a knife or a gun against parents or beating them.
