Why do people do the things that they do. First psychology research lab established in 1879 by wilhelm wundt in germany. Philosophers have always speculated about mind and behavior. Early psychologists wanted to apply more empirical methods. Psychologists were also interested in insights from other sciences (esp. Structuralism - elements of human culture must be understood by way of their relationship to a larger overarching system or structure. Early structuralists were interested in the structure of thought and feeling. 1880s - ebbinghaus tested his ability to remember lists of nonsense words at different time intervals. Functionalism - mental states are identified and understood by what they do rather than what they are made of. Freud thought behavior is governed by the unconscious mind (iceberg) Thought anxiety comes from conflict bw unconscious urges and awareness of moral standards. Methods: free association hypnosis, dream interpretation, interpretation of spoken language, freudian slip. Aim of psychoanalysis therapy was to release suppressed emotions.
