Module 8: respiration = oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between air and blood in three steps. Safety: treat oxygen therapy as a med. If it is not, the patient will breathe in large amounts of exhaled carbon dioxide. If the oxygen flow rate is greater than 4 l/min, use humidification. If the flow rate is less than 4 l/minute, body does it itself. Equipment: humidifier, oxygen flow meter, pulse oximeter, oxygen delivery device, nasal cannula and tubing, face tent and tubing, stethoscope. Procedure: before setting an oxygen flow rate, review the health care provider"s orders to confirm the prescribed oxygen delivery method, flow rate and duration of therapy, gather the necessary equipment and supplies, perform hand hygiene. Identify the patient using two identifiers: assess the patient"s respiratory system. If the ordered oxygen flow rate exceeds 4 l/min, attach the tubing to a humidified source of oxygen.
