Document Summary

After attributing something about someone, you tend to draw other characteristics from the same network to describe the same person. We hold implicit networks of associations in our minds about what traits and behaviours seem to go with others. Asch (1946: demonstrated certain traits are particularly strong at evoking certain impressions. Central traits more negative description: gave one set of people certain descriptions and others. This influenced people on their judgment of the described people. 2 models of perceiving people: quick, automatic, lazy, mindless, expedient processors, active thoughtful, mindful deliberate processors. We use both models: only depends n motivation, context cognitive heuristics. A mental shortcut that we take when we process information: ex: information-processing rules of thumb implicit personality theory. Availability heuristic false consensus effect: the tendency to estimate the likelihood that an event will occur by how easily instances of it come to mind. Ex: more likely to die in plane or car.
