Drugs introduced as medicine and crossed over into recreational purposes/drugs of abuse (e. g. cocaine, mdma, Lsd and not nitrous oxide, morphine, and amphetamines-still used for med. ) Psychedelic drugs are being used as therapy for disorders that are not treated by conventional medicine. Mdma = ecstasy, chemical cousin of amphetamines (synthesized around the same time) Effects: empathy, social, emotional connectedness, energetic because it is a stimulant drug. Has the ability to alter situations that are threatening. Used for couples therapy by alexander schulgin, good response in the sessions but real life circumstances did not allow the drug to be useful anymore. People"s lives created resistance to moving forward for the drug. Mid 80"s underground drug found its way into raves in europe. It was the first real club drug, even throughout the 90"s. Neurotoxic drug effects found in animal tested research but effects correlate to heavy use and alter basic cognitive tests (e. g. memory)
