Document Summary

Midterm is all of chapter 5 but only what is covered in today"s lecture even though there is some overlap between them. Psychoactive drugs have to enter the brain and be received/sensed by receptors. Both the brain and spinal cord are connected and are bathed in the same interstitial fluid. There is ongoing communication up/down the hierarchical organization of the nervous system. Pns includes the somatic system and the autonomic (parasympathetic/sympathetic system) Somatic = nerves that maintain sensation in the body (e. g. limbs, muscles, skin) Parasympathetic = rest and digest = maintenance of our body/homeostasis = default system. Sympathetic = fight or flight response = keeps us alive in a crisis or an acute stressful event. *inhibits activity of parasympathetic system in the time of threat to survival. Symptoms: release of adrenaline hormone from adrenal glands above the kidneys. Pupils dilate, skin contracts, blood flows to muscles to enable us to flee/fight, shallow breathing.
