With remorse you want to rehabilitate: there"s hope. People get emotionally invested into cases: depending on their history and biases. Punishment: do we do it for revenge, the good of the person. Costs and rewards of crime as key factors in behaviour: crime pays. Rewarding pro-social attitudes is losing ground: we are slowly going back to punishment based system. Importance of empirical research to inform responses and programing: clinical psychology directly informing clinical practice not correctional policy. Criminal code: respect for the law and maintenance of a just peaceful safe society, denunciation of unlawful conduct, removal of offenders from society, rehab of offenders, reparation to victims, promotion of responsibility in offenders. Always focused on the perpetrator: victims are detached from the process, they don"t feel they got justice since they never were in the process. Criminal code does not focus on punishment. It doesn"t state to deter people from offending. Imposition of sanctions: penalty for disobedience or reward for obedience.
