Power exists at all levels: global, societal, local, institutional, familial, interpersonal. Each level of power does not operate on its own but rather influence each other. Example: how we treat homeless on the street reflects how power plays around poverty. However, there are moments when one level is more compelling, more influential than the other levels. Social work intervention with multi level power analysis. In the past, our social work assessment might only focus on the family and family counselling. With out current understanding of power as multi-level we would consider all levels of intervention to assess the source of the power imbalance which in turn would affect how we intervene. With a power analysis social work intervention can happen at any level: global, societal, local, institutional, familial, interpersonal. And, assessment must look at all the influence not just interpersonal family dynamics.
