Something that someone does that violates social norms (ex: criminal behaviour) Something to do with someone"s body (ex: someone with tattoos) Violates social norms in the society in which it occurs. The idea to which people don"t confirm to norms, or those who confirm to a very large extent. You can under confirm to norms by not showing up to class. Negative deviance: any type of attitude, behaviour, condition that under-confirms the norms (ex: cheating on a test not confirming to acceptable conduct in a classroom) Rate busting: people over confirm to particular norms and aren"t viewed positively (ex: women who over confirm to western beauty, according to culturally specific standards, how they"re perceived by colleagues in workplace aren"t viewed positively. Definitions of deviance change over time: ex: smoking pot 20 years ago in public wasn"t acceptable in comparison to now.
