Document Summary

The terms race is approximately 500 years old. Refers to the similar characteristics in people, plants and animals. In the 18th century, the idea of these characteristics as physical or biological develops; there is something social to the content of the term race because it hasn"t remained the same where it is associated with humans now. In everyday speech (today), race is invoked through color and nationality (country) where sometimes it is synonymous and sometimes not such as using black people where you"re not talking about one specific nationality in particular. We will be using the word race to refer to a characteristic (surface level: hair, eyes, and skin color) that is biologically imbedded into an individual which should not be the case. The genetic difference within racial groups may be greater than the genetic difference between racial groups. Implications: category becomes empty where we don"t know what it specifically designates anymore.
