SOC 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Submersed, Human Behaviour, Social Change
Document Summary
Our behaviour doesn"t only come from our own free will. Society is a part of us and individuals collectively make it up. There are unwritten rules of society that we aren"t necessarily taught but we abide by them unaware of what we are doing. We only notice these rules exist when someone goes against our expectations or if we are submersed in another culture. Consistently what we believe to be an individual act is actually part of a larger pattern. Factors that seemingly have no deep impact but are responsible for making up who we are include gender, belief systems and our economic standing. Possessing strong feelings about our social lives and constant exposure of topics from the media make it difficult to study sociology because we feel as though we already possess a great deal of knowledge. Sociology forces us to think in new ways and reflect on ourselves.
