Document Summary
Chapter 7: the social construction of ideas and knowledge. The beliefs and ideas we have in our heads arise out of the particular conditions at specific moments in history and can be linked to a particular set of relations of power. Certain ideas dominate others ex: those who are poor are lazy and intelligent. Those who are rich and work hard are smart. We refer to a body of assumptions, ideas, and values that combine into a coherent world- view as an ideology. The core assumption of each group"s ideology is it is morally grounded and superior to others. We accept ideas as true because they are told to us by society, peer groups, parents, authority figures, those we see as experts, media. A person"s ideological framework has been built up over our lifetime. We acquire this package of beliefs and values through the process of socialization. Ideas are linked to a particular set of power relations.
