Document Summary

If you think of deviance as not complying with norms, it is possible to mix up the two different kinds of norms. The first is norms in the statistical sense; what the majority do. And the other type of norm is about norms as a standard for the way you act. The term deviance is about not conforming to the norm, and a whole bunch of issues have fallen under this topic. In old fashion sociology textbooks, you would tend to find under deviance information about people who disobey laws, issues of sexuality, issues of gender non conformity all in one chapter. The idea of what is normal changes over time. As the idea of normal changes, the idea and study of deviance changes as well. The non-conformity of yesterday is the mainstream of today. For example rock and roll becoming main stream.
