The actor is viewed as having had control over the rule-breaking behaviour: shamed individuals felt more responsibility and regret, more anger and disgust with themselves (vs embarrassment, guilt. Keltner and buswell (1997) concluded that: embarrassment follows from violations and conventions, shame follows from the violation of moral rules. The emotional state that underlies both embarrassment and shame fundamentally has to do with self-presentation: we dare about perception of others, we want to feel accepted. What is at the heart of the matter of embarrassment: embarrassment arises when we feel (often incorrectly) that our actual performance falls short of the standard we believe some audience expects, self-fulling prophecy.
