Race and Racism in Pop Culture
Defining Race
Cornel West:
- Meaning different things to different people in different places at different time
- Is a base for formation of social groups as they have shaped the formation of real or
imagined communities of people
- Represent the lived experiences of individuals and groups and reveal clear and real
dimensions of social/ in equality
Semiotics
- Critical race theory uses semiotics
Semiotics:
- Signs are made up of
1. Signifiers – the word or image
2. Signified – the concepts and ideas they represent
- Together they create a sign
- Semiotics examines how meaning in constructed, interpreted and understood through
signs we create, including cinematic and televisual words and images
Socially Conducted Racisms
- W/ in the PC exist images and representations of race that have become hegemonic
w/in the PC as it takes cues and clues from social world
1. Violent Assault
o Hates crimes such as physical assault or hate speech
2. Institutionalized Racism
o Exercised via unequal access to education, healthcare, housing and/ or
discrimination in the workplace
o When advantages are given to one group over another
3. Overt Racism
o When open and favorable coverage is given to arguments or positions who are in
an openly racist argument or want to advance racist ideology
o Inclusion and exclusion – settig oudaries of ho elogs ad ho does’t
o Produces and maintains ideologies addressing social status, economic political
power, Human rights, equality, self-determination and autonomy
Race in PC
1. Common sense (or passive positive) racism:
- Revealed via the expression of common sense or casual attitudes based on stereotype,
prejudice and often explained away through humor
- Appearing to make a positive statement (ie. Black ppl are good at bball, Chinese good at
math)
