News stories are about the here and now, what just happened, what is happening, what can be predicted to happen, breaking news, this just in, break away from another event to tell immediate news. News reporters don"t know the full story- they just try to offer their assumptions and predictions: personalization. Dominant ideology is reinforces and has two effects. Semiotic excess polysemy happens because we live in a world with semiotic excess. Roland barthes (1973)- mythology and ferdinand de saussure. The study of signs: analysis of messages that are visual, verbal, and non-verbal. Part of interpretation process: we use semiotics when we listen to music, watch tv, drive, walk. Signifier (physical object) anything senses are aware of. Signified (mental concept or idea) idea or mental concept that the signifier puts into my head. Culturally specific- things mean different things to different people.
