The meanings of race, gender and sexuality are historically speciic indiferent things to diferent people in diferent places at diferent imes. Act as a base for the formaion of social groups as they have shaped the formaion of real and imagined communiies of people. Both represent the lived experiences of individuals and groups and reveal clear and real dimensions of social inequality. Criical race theorists have used not only a sociological approach when examining the ei but have used semioics as well. Signs are made up of a) signiiers: the word or image from which the sign takers and b) signiied: the concepts and ideas they represent. Together a) and b) create a complete sign. Semioics examines how meaning is constructed, interpreted and understood through signs we create, including cinemaic & televisual words and images. As our discussions have revealed over the past few weeks, negaive or stereotypical representaions in media have real consequences.
