SOC 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: For Marx, Traditional Authority, Petite Bourgeoisie
Document Summary
Marx believed that all societies are organized around economic life (the mode of production) Ex: ancient greece & rome economic life was based on slavery (forced to work) masters vs. slaves. In feudalism (medieval time, military hierarchy) serfs worked on land owned by nobles (kings people, knights, advisors) and got to live as a tenant on the land (forced to work) lords vs. Capitalism, workers work for the bourgeoisie (upper class) (work by free choice- work or starve) When one group has control over property & production, the other group is left without control. In order to survive the propertyless class has to be placed in a subservient relationship with the propertied. Division of classes is based on relationship to means of production: capitalists own means of production, proletariat have no choice but to sell their labour for wages. Class depends on possessions of social and economic resources (capitalists have more, proletariats have less/limited)
