Living conditions for working people were appalling, marx thought there was a need for a new revolution. In every society, the class that owns means of production, controls the production of knowledge and ideas. The forms of consciousness we inhabit benefit the working class. We get information from the media, socially, and the owner class controls this because they own the media outlets, they sell views to advertisers and attract your attention. Business model: they sell you products by reporting the news and giving information. How we produce and obtain the material, economic relationships.
