Mythology - roland barthes (1973) and ferdinand de saussure (1916/1983) Signifier (what the senses are aware of) Words, something that stands for something, a mental concept or image. Anything and everything that our senses are aware of; physical objects, words, pictures, oral and visual representations, something you smell. Something cooked that you smell and reminds you of the past. Signifier is what your senses are aware of, and signified is the image that is put in your head. It changes according to culture, and the signs and images in different cultures are different and this is why you do not always understand the signs in different cultures. Signifiers in the card: heart, valentine, specific letters, the colours, the order of the words. For each of the following examples, please complete tables by first listing what signifiers are (what is denoted) and then what signifeds are (what is connoted).
