Broad overview of basic concepts and basic contexts. Problem of defining as blood and legal ties narrow definition of who constitutes the family. The children from the first marriage have no blood or legal ties to the spouse. How do we actually define it: physical, sexual. 2 most common ways people understand family violence and problematic because these are the least most common types, there are no physical manifestations in the vast amounts of family violence. Most common types: emotional, verbal, psychological financial, neglect. Women abuse we talk about them all plus financial and talk about financial instead of neglect. Neglect is very specific to children and older adults. For children, we do not talk about financial abuse because they cannot make financial decisions for themselves, instead we talk about neglect due to their lack of power of being able to make decisions for themselves.
