SOC 502 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Glass Ceiling, Masculinity, Immigration Policy
Document Summary
The book of genesis is a genealogy of how a family was defined all the way until the relative present: the family has historically been defined by blood and legal ties. Sharing a common ancestor and a blood line. In the last few hundred years adopted is recognized through legal contract, wherein parents signed that they are taking responsibility for a child, and in exchange they are going to be considered as their family. However, these contracts are legal obligations creating legal ties: the most formal legal tie is a marriage contract, the vast majority of people in the world (1950) was usually married off to someone they were blood tied to. Therefor family was historically tied to narrow definitions: when people started getting disowned by family they started making their own family. And they rely on each other for relationship support, financial support, and etc: the definition of family goes beyond the historical definition of blood or legal ties.
