SOC 502 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Neoconservatism, Psychological Abuse, Neoliberalism
Document Summary
Module 1) sociological analyses of violence and the family. Certain types of violence have become normative in our society ex. male violence. Society is violent towards some radicalized groups and the poor. Violence is linked to relationships of power, subordination, and oppression based on racism, sexism and class exploitation. Family violence: physical, sexual, emotional, financial, verbal and psychological abuse. There is ambiguity surrounding this definition b/c the legal definition of abuse is narrower and is defined from a male perspective. Much family violence is unreported and underreported b/c it is considered private matter. Thus, measurement of family violence can be problematic. Family relations and violence are reflective of relations of power and inequality in canadian society. Capitalists create jobs that are dangerous/ life-threatening. Culture of capitalism promotes individualism, competition and self-interest, puts wealth before wellbeing of workers. Gap between poor and rich is widening, thus, people are enduring violence of economic depri- vation and marginalization.
