Document Summary
Chapter 5: looking for explanations: exploring theoretical perspectives. Social context in which people live shapes how and why they act. Capitalism: hierarchal structure based on exploitation of workers. Causes social bond to deteriorate bc/ of competition, self-interest, efficiency and rationality. People suffer violence of economic deprivation and marginalization. Economic conditions: economic conditions that prevail in contemporary canadian society. People whose incomes remain above poverty line but still close to it are not necessarily in less dire financial straits. Social bond breaks down as people suffering from deprivation seek to gain something for themselves at the expense of others. Conflict is heightened as people struggle against one another for scarce resources. Conflict lead to escalation of violence, which damages adults and children. Damaged children grow up to be damaged adults. Social ethos of neoconservatism makes people believe that those unable to support themselves are those who do not deserve to do so.
