SOC525 Class Youth Culture Activism Negative connotation assigned to youth cultures ie) being irresponsible. Institutions see youth culture as a temporary phase and have a lack of consequence and lack of meaning into things that youth is into. Is considered disposable and not worth analysis or time: relegated to the margins Resistance rather than acceptance: understood to do something in your spare time; Youth is free of certain autonomy, not children and are legally allowed to vote own a car, etc but at the same time youth does not own a lot of money Youth cultures weren’t taken seriously because they did not have a specific socioeconomic impact and is stronger than cultural impact back in the day. It is historically as offering us two roles: • safe : in high school youth knows whose considered a threat or safe, youth uses subcultural groups and there are a lot more cultures now than there once was • threat Rise of youth culture: society discards youth but at the same time society privileges youth to the same extent and is hyper-valued. Historically, youth does not sit in one place you constantly move around ie) never want to be at home or in class socially and physically like moving between different cliques. Wayward youth began as a collaboration between the state ( police and agencies that govern us) and emerging fields of psychology and sociology. Police- punish us Government- set restrictions for us Psych-whats in your brain Soc- what your interests are Early 20 century when cities began to emerge, youth was literally seen and looked at; analyzed. In suburbs, youth congregated and looked at as being transient because youth would sit in parks at night and restaurant parking lots because they do not have their own place to congregate. Urban people and their problems were recognized to be similar to youth and their problems ie) alienation, poverty, immorality When we define each other, we frame people; you look at other people and you decide what other people mean because of what they wear and how she looks. Youth were seen as the victims or perpetrators, we were either safety or threatening. Two step process of framing: • media framing: have a group or person or person that belongs to a group and group will be surveillanced. The group will go to a pub night and talk about other groups defining them by the characteristics they see. Psych, Soc, police and government will speak out for youth and the media will represent youth in a specific way: • Dominant agency will decide what you are and then use social media to define you and then transmit the meaning of you out to the masses. You recognize the other, we frame the other (ie) use a photo, news story, occurrence; it will arrive in the news and then circulate through media and the meaning will be constructed as real • Someone is targeted and is then framed and there is evidence of what youth does that is stupid and it circulates through social media and the meaning constructed becomes real. The end result is: • moral panic: currently surrounding bullying; it violates the social values and interests of safety. It is then stylized, made interesting and needs to have something operating within it to engage us; stand out and certain behaviors and practices are labelled as warning zones. It is ideological in which it might affect us even though we might not believe it. Moral panic example: Group: young women Threat to social values: females; sex is not seen but it is recognized because they are disembodied; all you see in the ad is the body part that matters to sell the product Stylized: promiscuous Folk Devils: racial minorities: ruining Canadian culture Homeless: they are lazy, it is their fault that is why they do not have jobs Youth culture is seen as critical minded and able to negotiate sites of different demographics: if you negotiate a site of difference, culture sees you as being freer because you are able to recognize the difference
