1 - advice to mothers: 1880s - 1940s. Moral well-being and religious well being of children. Hygiene and health, physical and moral well being, scientific management of childhood. Mothers are responsible for turning her children into good workers or if working class/elite, good capitalists. Self-restraint and discipline: need to learn patience since husbands needs come first and children"s needs are second to his. How did they learn patience and discipline: putting children on a schedule. When children cried, they had to learn to wait - you fed them on a schedule. In order to meet the health requirements, you needed to toilet train your child. Focus was on domestic labor rather than child care: 1950s - 1990s. Most famous pediatrician giving the most important medical advice given to women and mothers do not question it (dr. spock) Mothers are not only responsible for physical well being but emotional as well. Food and milk was delivered once a week.
