History of families - industrial era 1880"s -1940"s. Women"s status was inferior to me, through religion as well as secular law. Women"s work became completely unrecognized because of the separation of the private and public spheres. In order to convert from a family farm to a mechanized farm you had to focus on growing one particular crop only. Children started migrating to cities because they were looking for work, as the farms could no longer support them. People were paid very low wages, and weren"t considered paid well until after wwii. There was no such thing as the male bread winner in the farming society because men"s wages weren"t enough to support families. Children were an incredibly important secondary support system for keeping a family alive because they worked. Catholic women were the only people who were able to avoid marriage, as they joined convents.
