Soc656 week 7 - deviancy, difference, and dress. Deviance: the recognized violation of social norms. Social control: society"s attempts to regulate people"s beliefs and behaviour. Deviancy, espeically crime, is related to five factors: One of first theories to explain existence of crime. Assumption in society about what is right and wrong. Ideas that say difference is normal in society, unifies society, and allows for change. Says deviancy exists because we live in a society that creates unrealistic expectations in its members. Innovation (you take a shortcut to success, cheat ) 1: ritualism, retreatism (when you reject the goals of society and the way you get there, rebellion (rejects society"s goals and makes new goals) Think of deviance as not something that the criminal does, but rather, it"s something that society labels as deviant. It"s not what you do, it"s society action to what you do . Deviancy is a stigmatizing label devised by society.
