Muslims constituted about 10% of enslaved african americans that were brought to the continent of north america during the 18th 19th centuries. These enslaved africans were able to retain traces of their religion in the absence of freedom of religion in that period of american history. Early converts adopted practices that were different from the two orthodox sects of islam . Black muslim group nation of islam developed in the 1940s. Gained many followers in response to its call for black autonomy, pride, and ethical responsibility. Relationship between african american muslims and muslim immigrants who arrived during the 20th century has been complicated: presumed claim to religious authenticity among arab and south asian muslims that excludes african american muslims. Hip-hop became a mode of response to the desperation caused by unemployment and shortage of activities for youth. Hip-hop generation = young african americans born between 1965 and 1984 who share a specific set of values and attitudes.
